Mr. Frank miscalculates... again!
OK, it's 17 miles of beautiful rail trail and sidewalk to the bridge at Sandy hook. Google maps calls it an 18.1 mile walk. So, that's what we calculated. We didn't account for the walk from the bridge in Sandy Hook down the shore to the Coast guard and then into the labrythine interior of the facility. By our best calculations, the walk on the beach cost another eight miles, although we couldn't measure exactly. We walked about 25 miles by our best calculations, and that's certainly more than the 18.1 advertised. At least we'd have a day off afterwards. Our younger walkers were alterted to leave the beach about a mile from the endpoint, but we weren't sure why. Later, we discovered that had we continued, we'd have wandered onto the nude beach.
The next day was a day off, supposed to be a relaxing beach day. However, it rained for most of the day, and the Coast Guard was kind enough to give us shelter after we discovered that our tents were not adequate for the heavy rains of the previous night. At least we ate well, thanks to the cooking of Coach Pam, who cooked enough to serve sixty people. The second night, we watched movies, and enjoyed being indoors, dried our tents and prepared for the next day's journey.
