First night in Bear Country...

July 13: From Montclair to Star Lake

This day was much longer than we'd anticipated. Since no one had responded to our requests to stay in the area, we had to shuttle our people to Wawayanda State park after, what we though, would be a 23-mile walk, including a detour in the wrong direction. Our walk was made harder by the fact that none of those 23 miles was over a flat surface. We climbed a hill that must have been about a forty degree slope, and then, even more difficultly, had to go down the other side. Our day was close to a 24 mile day, and the walk inside Wawayanda certainly brought the the total to 24 miles.. We had a long rest at a park near the Boonton Reservoir. A bear came within 20 feet of our walkers, staring at us from just below the deck of the nature center where we'd stopped to rest. The walk had a narrow shoulder and was treacherous. We were attacked by Mome Wraiths several times along the way. They picked off the DLBF crowd- (Dead last but finished). After our rest, we completed a five-mile hike into Boonton, and were shuttled to Wawayanda.
