KID #1:

Hi,

I am a kid but I can't give you my name. It's against the rules. I love nature. Sometimes I wonder if I'm good.

My favorite board game is Dragonology. I have 7 friends and my favorite show is Heroes. I always love to play.

In Heroes, my favorite character is Hiro Mackunra.

I am nine years old. I am the younger in my family, but the most important thing about me - I don't run from challenges. I fight them.

From,
Anonymous

P. S.  I'm not afraid of 165 miles.

KID#2:

I AM WRITING IN BIG LETTERS TO CATCH YOUR ATTENTION... Now that I have it……….

Dear sponsor,

My mission is to persuade you to sponsor me. That’s what Mr. Cipriani  told me to do -I thought you might like to know what you were in for .

Now the journey to find if I am the right walk-abouter to sponsor begins.

I am going to write a little about myself -also part of the assignment. Well, my mother gave birth to me April 24 1993. My further ambitions are to go to the Air Force Academy (which means after that I have to serve). With the money I get in the Air Fore I will spend on owning real estate while running for mayor of some town for a few years then become Governor of NJ with the money I saved up (a big step I know). Then Run for president of America and that’s my broad plan for life I will include children, marriage, owning a business, buying a Ferrari and driving it on the Autobahn, and other details that could go on for ever. I also happen to be an Oakland Raiders fan (that may have ended my chances of being chosen but its an important thing about me). I am team leader of  the best team on the walk about. If one of my team mates don’t have a sponsor please sponsor them instead, but if they have a sponsor please feel free to sponsor me!

Fun facts about yours truly –if you do not wish to read them the end of the letter is waiting for you, but Enddie is a patient creature so you can take your time if you'd like to.

Fact#1: my favorite weather is rainy, snowy, or foggy

Fact#2: I have lots of nicknames

Fact#3: My favorite food is sushi eel roll with fish eggs and soy sauce

Fact#4: blood red is my first favorite color then black next pink

Fact#5: I am the second child out of 4 I have an older sister a younger sister and a brother

Fact#6: my sprit animals are the heron and Maple tree

Fact#7: my inner cupcake often tells me my dog Zeus the best dog that ever lived and my inner cupcake is always right!!!

Well that’s it for my letter I hope you liked it! If you sponsor me or not thank you for reading my letter and contributing for the NJ jersey walkabout

God bless and have a nice day

KID#5:

Hello Dear Organization, Foundation, or Individual,

I am trying at this moment to try and convey to you just how important the Gatherer Institute is to me, the environment, and the future of America. I apologize for my rudeness, please, let me first introduce myself. I am a sixteen year old student at High School South. Through my life I have had a particular fascination with unusual and unique things. One interest I have had since childhood is a love of sharks. I love to learn about new species of sharks, and I love their streamlined shape and graceful movements. I am also a large Star Trek Deep Space Nine fanatic and make my own earrings. One of my biggest, and, sadly, addicting habits is reading comics. My aspiration is to one day draw and write my own comic, even if there is only one issue.

A favorite food of mine is LoMein. My favorite dessert is rainbow cookies. I drink a lot of Yerba Mate and my favorite singer is a Cuban man named Silvio Rodriguez. I know my likings are not exactly mainstream, but they are part of my identity. I have a lot of Hungarian blood and have visited the country. I love the culture, and have too much Hungarian pride for my amount of Hungarian ethnicity.

One very important factor in my life is my family (if I haven’t bored you to the point of collapse yet, you have my admiration). In my family, there is a certain unique culture to the way we function. We have a set of traditions and principles that are upheld. For most of my life, my TV watching and sugar intake has been limited to certain days of the week. My father also took me on long distance runs when we were very young. When I look back on such things, it does not seem strange to me, it seems normal.

When I was young, my father taught me to respect nature and love the forest. I feel lucky to know that the forest is a sanctuary that I can escape to. The 88 Acres have become like a home to me.  I know every trail, and I know the trees as well. When I have been gone for days they welcome me back and I am home.

Please consider these words, and thank you for plowing through them.

KID#6:

Go Team Go! I love being part of a group and encouraging everyone to work together and do his best. I play soccer for my varsity high school team. We won regionals this year. My favorite subject is science. I was home schooled until this year and I really like the blending of ages and abilities on our walk about teams. I work with the Children's Club in my church. I am an Airman First Class in Civil Air Patrol. I sing bass in our school choir ensemble. This is a wonderful opportunity and I am thankful for any assistance you can give.

KID#7:

Dear sponsors,

Here’s some facts: I have a good natural singing voice. I also make good appetizers. I know a bit about what is poisonous and what is edible in forests. I like swimming. I once swam five laps in five minutes. I think you should sponsor us because we are verrrry good people to sponsor and also the Walkabout is a good program to sponsor. Here is more information about Yours Truly: I wrote my own book it is about a girl who’s named Luna but she has one verrrrry Big secret. She is more than meets the eye. She is no human. She is a wolf. An honest to goodness wolf. Twenty chapters of her adventures and stories are in my first book. She acts as if she was not writing this down in her journal but if the readers were right in front of her, watching her tell the story or adventure.

KID#8:

Good afternoon or whenever you’re reading this, Possible Sponsor. I would introduce myself with my name but this letter has to remain anonymous (I think you know that already) To start out I am a guy. I didn’t want to mislead you. On my walkabout team I am the communications person. I also find interest in computers. I just started skateboarding on Christmas, and I think I’m pretty good.

The reason why I want to go on this walkabout is to test my physical and mental discipline, also I was recruited. I am an athlete that does bowling, baseball and basketball. My future aspiration is to become a pro baseball player or a pro bowler. I am a Red Sox fan and my favorite NFL team is the New Orleans Saints. I have been told that I am a good teacher if that’s true or not is a matter of opinion, but I think I am.

This year I am home schooled but next year I am going to high school. Hopefully, I am going to be a pitcher for the baseball team (Go South Go!) I will be 14 in June. I have two older sisters and an older brother and a Border collie. In April I am going to be an uncle and I’m very anxious about the arrival of my future niece. That’s a little bit about myself and I hope that you enjoyed my letter. Have a good life because I may never meet you. Thank you for reading my sponsorship letter!

Sincerely, ???????

KID#9:

Dear Sponsor,

I know it is a lot to ask you to sponsor me even though you  may have never met me. But I think that I am a worthy person to sponsor. I am 12 years old. I am in Civil Air Patrol. I have been told that I am inspiring. My favorite football teams are the Eagles and Giants. I realize it’s not the usual pair but I still like them both. My job is Ant on team Apple Cookie. I am glad that you have read this letter. Have a nice day!

KID#10:

I love the outdoors and all sports, especially the running part. I play for the Red Bulls soccer team for my age group. I am in Boys' choir. Science and spelling are my favorite subjects. I like to camp. I am rooting for the Colts in the Super Bowl. I cheer for the Yankees.

KID#11:

Hi, everybody. I am the one who wrote that letter that a lot of people took offense to.* When I wrote it, i was strongly expressing myself, because I was just a little flustered that the Eagles were out thanks to the Saints. I guess that I was expressing my words stronger than my feelings. I am sorry for any controversy that I have caused everybody. I don't wish for anyone to die, or crash in a horrible plane accident, and etc. I am not really like that, and I actually like the Colts, and the Browns, just not as much as the Eagles.

HI. I'm 14 years old. I am a big Eagles fan. I also like to skate, and I am pretty good at it too. It stinks that the Eagles are out of the playoffs. I hope that the Colts win the Super bowl, but ((*OFFENDING LINE REMOVED AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST)) I also like to play mmorpg's
on my computer. Like WOW!"

KID#12:

I’m 13 years old and I go to Intermediate South. I want you to sponsor our team on the walk. My fave football team is the Falcons.

KID#13:

I will turn ten this year in July. I really like math and science. Soccer is my best sport, but I like all sports. I sing in the Boys' choir and I really like to play the piano, and I am teaching myself the guitar. I like the Giants. I am excited to go on the walkabout. Thank you if you pick me. I like Tacos. I am a twin and we are the youngest of twelve. My job in the group is the Ant which is like the treasurer.

KID#14:

I am almost ten years old. I play soccer for my town. I also enjoy other sports. I am in the Boys' Choral Group at school. I really like camping. I love the ocean. Football is one of the sports I really enjoy playing. My brother and I are twins and we are last of twelve children. We are blue eyed blonds like Zach and Cody. I am the otter for my group which is like security.*

*actually it is logistics and supplies - the editors.

KID#15:

I love sports, especially soccer. I am afraid of pit bulls. I love soccer. I'm going to be signing up to play.

I like rock music.

My advice to people is: It's very good to learn about nature. You should never kill plants or nature.

Life has taught me that it is good.

I'd like any kind of person to sponsor me.

I'm the leader of my team.

I have- 2 dogs, 2 parents, 2 brothers, 2 states that I have lived in (NJ SC), 2 turtles, and 2 best friends. At home, we root for 2 different football teams. I've got 2 favorite TV shows: Drake and Josh, and Zack and Cody- two shows about 2 kids.

So maybe I can have 2 sponsors.

KID#16:

I love sports, especially soccer. I am afraid of pit bulls. I like animals. I love flying squirrels.

I want to be a nurse when I grow up.

I like to jump on the trampoline and go in the woods. I like to walk around and see nature in the woods.

I clean to help around the house. I help my brother with his homework. He's turning 17. He has special needs.

I'm eleven.

My least favorite chore is dishes. My favorite chore is cleaning. My favorite show is Spongue Bob. My favorite food is carrots. My favorite color is baby blue.

KID#17:

I’m smart, I’m outgoing, where I live a lot of kids are doing other things with their time, for example joining gangs, experimenting with drugs and what-not, fighting.

I haven’t got into a fight since fourth grade.

It’s fun when I meet new people because the way I dress, the way I talk they misread me, but then they actually see how smart I am, they’re shocked.

If I had the choice of living for two weeks with a gang, or living 24 hours walking to plant trees and save New Jersey, I would save New Jersey.

Why, you ask? Because one day my children are going to live here. If they’re going to cut down our trees, we should have an extra supply for when these run out.

As a 13-year-old boy who has so many negative things around him, I think I’m doing pretty good.

KID#18:

I'm a 15 yr. old girl living in STR. I love it here. I go to High School South (freshman). I have lots of friends here because I am funny, smiley, love nature, love exploring new things. This sounds fun to be traveling miles and miles. It's becoming real to me that animals and our environment is very really important to our world, by being safe with things around you and real. I like meat, veggies, and yummy treats. I love watching TV, reading books and writing songs from me.

I think that we as people should not be smoking AT ALL! It's very bad. People like my friends say I am very caring for others. I love telling stories to my brothers at night. My favorite season is summer, because you can go to the beach, Six Flags, in your pool. It's all so very hot and fun. I like taking walks around my block 2 times just to see birds, blue sky, green grass. It is very interesting to me. My favorite subject in school is Science. I 've loved it ever since 6th grade. I like (earth) animals- very fun for exploring. My favorite movie is Happy Feet, also the Little Mermaid. I like shopping at the OCM, Wal-Mart. My favorite style is Lth2, Hollister, Mary-Kay Ashley, Baby Phat and Old Navy. I love chocolate, oatmeal, iced tea, cookies, pie. I love flowers, roses, sunflowers. They smell very good, sweet and fresh. Well, that's all I have in mind to give, so please help us for a good team name!

I’m smart, I’m outgoing, where I live a lot of kids are doing other things with their time, for example joining gangs, experimenting with drugs and what-not, fighting.

KID#19:

To whom it may interest,
Have you ever thought about what happens to the animals, or what effects cutting down too many trees will have on us? Honestly, I cannot change yours or anyone's opinion on nature or pollution or even politics but I can try. I'm not going to try to change your opinions in politics though. My name is ________, and I am a fourteen year-old athlete in the Toms River Regional School District. Hopefully, I will be the starting pitcher for TRIS softball team, I was previously captain of the basketball team, and I love to be active. Yeah, we all vegg out sometimes though. I take all honors classes, but honestly, I feel like the most ignorant person in the world, when it comes to nature in New Jersey. I don't want to go on and on filling your head with information and end abruptly, so I am getting straight to the point. I need you to sponsor me or even more than me, so I can help contribute all I have to our cause, New Jersey, and help so many others acquire knowledge so they, in fact, can pass it down for generations like the old storytellers you hear about in books.

I enjoy so many things: softball, food, and just hanging out with my friends. Honestly, I couldn't live without them. My friends are like my stoop and roots, keeping me on the face of this planet. I often daydream during classes, and I wish we had an innumerable amount of time outside. How many times do you find yourself dozing off during work? I know it's a lot, don't be afraid to admit it. Don't you just wish you had fresh air in your office?
I know this is getting really long so my instincts are telling me to hurry this up. If you think you like me, please donate to the cause. Whether it is five dollars or one-hundred, it is all going to mean the same thing to me. If you don't like me, then please donate to the other fabulous people that you see listed above me.
Thank you for your time,

})({____________________})({

KID#20:

Dear Sponsor
Hi. I am doing a Walkabout and this letter is for you to realize that I need you to sponsor me. But I am going to tell you a little bit of me. I am 11 years old. I like football, baseball, and I like the Eagles and the White Sox.
My favorite color is red, I do track and I play baseball. I like to be fit and to have fun.
I need you to sponsor me so I can raise this money to be on the walkabout. Thank you and have a nice sponsor me day.

KID#21:

Dear Sponsor
I have a hard time expressing myself.
I can’t do it. I can’t talk to a big crowd. I get nervous, when I write, it’s hard for me, ‘cause I can’t focus. I have ADHD. My problem is I’m scared to mess up. I want to leave my mark on my family and children before I die. I want to show everybody out there that I could be somebody. But there’s too much gang violence, where I live, and wherever I go. There’s always fights, and I somehow always get caught up in the middle. I want to be a football player. I’m a running back/ wide receiver/ defensive end. At least on the football field, it’s good to get in the middle of things.

$140 will sponsor one child for the entire experience, including food, accomodations, insurance and events en-route, but you can make your tax-deductible donation in any amount you choose.

When you make a donation you will be using the "Network for Good" Giving System so you can be certain that your charitable donation is 100% tax deductible.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The Gatherer Institute has a strict policy governing all its activities:

We will never refuse an applicant because their family is unable to pay for one of our activities. We also believe that a child will appreciate an experience even more if they have earned it.

This is the means by which, all kids, regardless of need, will be able to earn his/her $140 fee that will offset the various costs associated with the walkabout.

By asking all kids to write sponsorship letters, no one family is singled out on the basis of need. A kid sponsored at the $140 level will be considered paid in full for the walkabout. If a child already has a sponsor, his/her non-sponsored teammates will be the first beneficiaries, and after the whole team is sponsored, your money will go to sponsoring another kid on the basis of need.

In terms of the competition, each child will earn 1 point for every dollar of sponsorship his/her letter earns.
