The South Toms River Alliance and The Gatherer Institute present:
A Course in PRIMITIVE SURVIVAL

Imagine being lost in the woods, miles from modern conveniences such as running water and electricity, far from roads and civilization.... And loving it!

Our Primitive survival course is a combination of Xtreme sports and ancient knowledge.

In this one-week course, you will learn how to make fire using materials available in nature, identify tracks and stalk animals, build a hut, find food, walk silently through the forest, camouflage to near-invisibility and read the sounds of animals and the lay of the land like book. Our instructor, Matt Hollen lives in a hut he constructed himself, back in the Pine Barrens. He has taught these skills throughout the country. For two weeks, he will be living in a shelter here in South Toms River, and teaching.

Course I:  NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED OR THE COUCH POTATO
For individuals age13-18, will run from June 25-29. The course runs from 9-5 those days. Students will be asked to pack their own lunch, and bring a pocketknife. Registration fee is $35 for STR residents, $70 for non-residents. After 5 PM, parents and siblings (and students) are welcome to come back and sit around the fire with Matt.

Course II:  BE A PRIMITIVE-IN-TRAINING
For kids age 8-12, this course will run from June 30 to July 7, with the Fourth off. Prepare to learn, appreciate the wilderness, learn the language of the animals, and get real dirty!!! You must bring your own bag lunch, and you may bring a pocketknife.

With the knowledge your child gets from this course, s/he can never go hungry and never be homeless, as long as the woods still stand. They will experience a feeling of awe, wonder and confidence that no drug can match, and no TV show can duplicate.

Please call (732)736-1223 to register. Ask for Frank.

Parents: Our one requirement is that your children themselves want to participate in this program.
Scholarships are available for those who cannot afford the registration fee.
